Lisa Hess co-founded Pontchartrian Humane Society (PHS), a non-profit organization that rescues homeless and abused domestic animals; provides vaccinations to all rescued animals, and veterinary care to infirm animals; spays/neuters all rescued animals; organizes regular pet adoptions to the public; and educates the public on being a responsible pet owner. PHS does not maintain a shelter, and relies on volunteers to foster animals in their homes. The organization also works with senior living facilities throughout the New Orleans area where residents are directly involved in pet adoptions and PHS sponsored events. In 7 years PHS has rescued over 1,200 domestic animals. Despite relocating to Sarasota, Florida, Lisa continues to serve on the Board for PHS, and remains active in PHS’s on-going mission.

Jen volunteers in a soup kitchen in Cochabamba, Bolivia which was started by her mother. Jen first got involved when a longtime missionary from her church approached her mother about opening a soup kitchen several years ago. Proceeds from church collections support the soup kitchen and it is thriving, feeding a hot meal to over 85 kids per day. Without the soup kitchen, most of the children would not have a meal that day. Jen finds the children of Cochabamba inspiring and notes that “they had so little, but were unbelievably happy. Their joy of the little things in life was something I will never forget.” Jennifer Montgomery, LEED AP

A member of the construction administration group, Matt volunteers his time to Habitat for Humanity. He has worked on single day projects, such as the construction of a house in Gardner, Massachusetts, for a single father and his son, and has worked on longer term projects as well. Recently, Matt worked on a Habitat for Humanity project in Slidell, Louisiana, near New Orleans. For a week, Matt worked on framing, roofing, carpentry, and siding for multiple houses in the area. Matt found the work both difficult and rewarding, and hopes to participate in future projects. Matt Dunn, CSI, CCCA, LEED AP

Through the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, Danielle is a mentor to an 8-year old girl from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Once a week, Danielle meets with her “little sister,” a second grader, and takes her out for an activity. They have gone ice skating at the Frog Pond, seen a movie, visited the Children’s Museum, and baked cookies. Her “little sister” lives in public housing with her mom, stepfather, and three older brothers, and wanted the support and guidance from an older female friend. Danielle, who has two younger sisters of her own, got involved in the program to share her experience as a big sister and remain connected to children. Danielle McDonough LEED AP

A healthcare planner, Paul is a volunteer with Forward in Health, a Massachusetts-based organization that provides free health care in Fonde Fred, Haiti. Paul’s involvement in the group began when they were seeking an architect to help them plan a permanent clinic – up until that time, they provided care in temporary facilities – literally under the trees.

Paul worked with Forward in Health staff and volunteers to design the clinic, and recently traveled to Haiti to make a site visit of the project, now under construction. The 2-story clinic will have a triage area, exam rooms, a dental clinic, room for X-ray facilities, a pharmacy, a lab, and a medical records area. During his trip to Haiti he also volunteered at the temporary clinic, running the intake process.

Steve has served on the board of the Memphis Literacy Council for the past three years, as both board member and board chair. The Memphis Literacy Council is an independent, nonprofit educational organization that provides programs for low-literate adults and disadvantaged families. His passion for the organization stems from the alarming statistic that one out of three adults in the Memphis area is functionally illiterate. As the leader and spokesperson for the organization, Steve believes that if we can improve this one statistic we would go a long way in solving the problems of crime, public education, poverty and healthcare in our community. Steve’s next challenge is to facilitate the merger of the Memphis Literacy Council and Mid-South Reads. The combined organization will reach an even wider audience and provide a broader range of services and resources. Steve Berger, AIA, LEED AP

Larry Partridge, a native Bostonian and beloved architect in his home city, relocated his family to Birmingham in 1973, to open TRO Jung|Brannen’s first regional office. Not one to move through the world timidly, Larry embraced the challenge with zest, right down to the renowned southern accent which he perfected by practice and a class he discovered at a local college. He was one of the founders of the Magic City Art Connection, a local arts festival which thrives in Birmingham today. Many members of the veteran office staff still recall stories of Larry’s passion for people which trumped his gift for architectural design. Larry Partridge, AIA
